The purpose of this summary is to inform the reader about the contents of "The Narrative". The summary tells how Douglas came to write the autobiography and gives a brief description of his life. "The Narrative" is a classic and the summary is used to inform the reader of what he/she can get from the book, as opposed to what the book can give to the reader.
